About Derra

Hello! I am Derra Howard. I am a native of Houma, La. I started my love of writing at the age of 12. I started writing poetry in my social studies class with my friends. That was the beginning of a beautiful love affair. From that moment on, I began to write poems. In high school, I wrote for the newspaper. I had a “Dear Abby” column in both high school and college where I’d help students with their problems. But in my 10th grade English class, my teacher Mr. Moore introduced an entirely different style of writing; story telling. This allowed me to express myself in ways I never thought I could. Needless to say, I excelled in his class, always the first to complete my projects and excited to receive them!
After graduating high school, I went to college. At first I attended Nicholls State Universty, where I studied journalism and worked for the newspaper. I wasn't really sure of what I wanted to do. I went through various phases of wanting to please everyone. Starting out majoring in Accounting, because that's my familys' business. I decided against that and majored in Mass Communications-Broadcasting.
Then I transfered to Southern University and A&M. I graduated from "SU" with a Bachelor’s in Mass Communications and a concentration in Broadcasting. I worked as a correspondent writer for The New York Times affliate newspaper called 'The Houma Courier. There I was able to do stories about modern day heroes, business owners, and concert interviews. Then I started working for an online magazine called Onyx. During that time, is when I formed the idea of creating a website of some kind. As the editor decided to delay . One day in 2015, while at work I drew an outline of my website; the topics I wanted on it and all the things that were interesting. When I made it home, I made an even bigger outline and put it on the living room wall in her apartment. I had each topic up on the wall and turned her living room in to an office. From that moment on, my blog was born. I wasn't certain, but I kept going. I just kept doing it and everytime I was in doubt, I would have a sign to keep going! To find news that inspires, attend events, and just be with the ones you love is what my blog is about. I have a vision for my personal blog; which is to inspire and inform daily and live your best life!
Imagine. Inspire. Live.
